Probiotic bacteria and intestinal epithelial barrier function

Source: Pharmacology, 2020

The intestinal epithelium is in constant contact with luminal contents and the varied, dynamic enteric microflora. The distal small bowel, cecum, and colon have increasing bacterial colonization relative to more proximal regions, with up to 1010 to 1012 colony-forming units per gram of intestinal content in the colon.
